What is DALI?

Digital Adressable Lighting Interface

DALI – the basis for application oriented lighting management

DALI (Digital Adressable Lighting Interface) is the international non-proprietory interface standard for dimmable electronic control gears – EN/IEC 62 386.

Lighting solutions with DALI offer greater functionality and easier handling than systems with analog interface 1...10 V.

Interplay between control unit and electronic control gear

Up to 64 DALI electronic control gears can be controlled via a 2-wire control line individually, jointly or in up to 16 groups.

The lighting is switched and dimmed via the control line, i.e. a there is no need for relays.
Important information, such as the status of the lamp, are stored within the electronic control gear and accessable to the control unit.

DALI is an interface for all light sources in professional lighting solutions. OSRAM offers a wide range of DALI ECGs for fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps, halogen lamps and LED modules.

Benefits:

Simple planning

The lighting groups do not have to be assigned at the planning stage. Instead, they can be simply set up later through the control unit. This allows separate planning of control line and mains supply.

Easy installation

The control line is protected against polarity reversal and can be routed together with the mains supply in a 5-core sheathed cable. There is no special cable required, the control line only has to be rated for mains voltage.

Flexible lighting groups

With DALI, the lighting groups are not hard-wired. The individual luminaires are grouped by simply assigning them to groups with the aid of the control unit. THe settings can be changes at any time.

Synchronous change of light scenes

With DALI, a change of light scenes will happen instantly, regardless differing dimming status or a combination of various light sources. The new lighting setup will be achieved at once.

DALI goes hand in hand with building automation

DALI-run luminaires can easily be integrated into building automation systems via existing gateways, such as EIB, LON and Ethernet.

The lighting groups do not necessarily have to be planned from the beginning. They can conveniently be arranged later by addressing.

With the easy installation and planning, as well as flexible lighting groups and feedback signal about the lamp's status taken into concern, lighting management systems with DALI are far more cost effective than systems with 1...10 V.
